What is Canine Conditioning and Fitness for Dogs ?

Here's a sample to get your imagination flowing ... then pop on down below and read a bit more about all its benefits

You know our Moments for Excellence story - we are about being the very best you possibly can be, in anything and our vision is to bring you the resources that might give you that million dollar idea or skill that can transform the moment and propel you to places you never even imagined possible,

Each of these workshops feature skills and techniques necessary for growth, and for success and longevity in any dog activity. Like us the dog literally moves every minute of the day, sometimes changing from sound asleep to chasing a squirrel at high speed in your yard in seconds. Sometimes we ask them to run and turn at very high speeds for under a minute, and sometimes we ask them to walk and run on unlevel and frequently unstable terrain for hours in conditions that are not ideal. If you live in Canadian winters like us, you know how quickly you can lose your balance on ice - laminate flooring is like ice for dogs. Sometimes they age (no, they always age) and with that keeping the body active is of ultra importance.

Canine conditioning uses dog specific equipment  like FitPAWS, or Totofit (or DIY alternatives) both of an unstable and stable nature to challenge the dogs ability to balance and to build and maintain balance within the dog. Puzzled - check out the What is Balance PDF.

Proper conditioning will not only make your dog stronger and reduce injury risk, it will teach your dog how to use its muscles, and body in general more efficiently - which will mean faster starts and stops, more endurance, tighter turning, and overall a more thoughtful dog. Whether they participate in a dog sport or not, conditioning is important. It is felt that even a week of non-activity or low activity, the dog like a human, will lose a large amount of its conditioning (just think about when you go back to the gym after a 2 week vacation). Proper conditioning will also identify weak areas as well as areas of overuse, in both canine athletes and the pet dog.

Canine conditioning can be either a structured conditioning program or a regular day at the gym - the key is regular and consistent. The dog learns skills on various pieces of equipment, and then in combinations of equipment. Each skill is as simple as a trick you teach you dog, starting with the foundation behaviour of 2 front feet on something. The dogs love this, it uses mental and physical energy, is calming, builds confidence and social contact.

  • where you are the student and the dog is the teacher

  • where almost every dog can participate and be better immediately

  • Prerequisite Foundations Course at one of the approved sources

  • Shoulders & Iliopsoas are two areas of high injury risk in athlete dogs, and in dogs that do activities that involve abrupt turning, speed from a standstill (like chasing a squirrel or a ball) and slippery surfaces - basically when being a dog. Find out some of the signs of injury as well as how to strengthen to prevent injury, and after an injury

  • Jumping skills - whether it is agility, or into your SUV, onto the bed, correct form and weight shifting is critical. This section will teach you and your dog how to use his body in better form and provide exercises to build strength

  • Advanced Combos - once the dogs core is strong and the body in balance, the possibilities are unlimited and can mimic many of the key actions in dog sports
